  1. This picture reminded me of how important rivers were in days of yore. The Nina and Pinta were smaller vessels than the Santa Maria. As in the settlement of Yorktown and Jamestown on the James River, ships would navigate the larger rivers as far as they could safely travel, unload and establish a community there. Eventually roadways, highways, railways and airports would replace the river routes with their unpredictable water level, currents and flooding. But for watercraft of all size, from rafts and canoes to riverboats and larger ships, rivers were the highways of the day. Beware of the Jolly Roger as ye sail on in The Big Taxi.
